EU Taxonomy Explained to SMEs

Home - Shared Value Africa Initiative

 10.00 - 11.00

Taxonomy is one of these obscure words the EU coins and makes everybody wonder what it means. It is part of the EU's Green Deal strategy, aiming at reducing the EU's greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 in 2030. This has the potential to impact quite a lot on economic activities, and SMEs need to be informed and prepared in order to face the consequences of such an instrument.

To do so, join our SME crisis webinar 'EU taxonomy explained for SME' on June 21st at 10:00

Protect your intellectual property,  save money with the SME Fund

Home - Shared Value Africa Initiative

 09.00 - 10.00
CEST | 7 June 2022

EUIPO, the European Union Intellectual Property Office, is working to ensure that European SMEs can defend their intellectual property all over the continent.

In doing so, it has put in place a series of very appropriate measures. One of the most successful is the SME Fund, a grant scheme designed to help EU SMEs' intellectual property rights. It offers financial support to SMEs established in the European Union. The application can be filed by an owner, an employee or an authorised representative of an EU SME acting on its behalf. Grants are always transferred directly to SMEs.

Join our webinar with experts from EUIPO and protect your assets, something even more important during crises like COVID-19 and the rise of energy prices.

High Energy Costs: Immediate and Smart Ways to Reduce

Home - Shared Value Africa Initiative

 17.00 - 18.30
CEST | 28 April 2021

The combination of high inflation, the international crisis in Ukraine and an already unstable market are driving energy prices extremely high, to the point where, without support, many small and medium-sized businesses in Europe are at risk of significant losses if not outright bankruptcy.

Governments across the EU are taking different measures to support impacted companies, but their efforts are often too limited to make a real difference, and more is undoubtedly needed. On the other hand, what can SMEs do to absorb this economic shock?

Three possible steps can make a real difference:

  1. 1. Save energy by consuming less. This solution often entails reorganising energy consumption across the company, but it can deliver tremendous results.
  2. 2. Reorganise the production line or postpone some actions for the near future (hoping that prices will decrease in a few months). A more long-term approach can deliver significant savings once the energy market becomes more approachable.
  3. 3. Buy cheaper energy from new providers or buy all your energy in bulk from the same provider in exchange for a better price. While in a crisis, the market is still wide open, so there might be opportunities for saving costs by changing the way energy is purchased.

These might sound like an efficient solution, but how do you apply them in practice? Learn this from our expert on Thursday, April 28th at 17.00

EU sanctions against Russia and how to deal with them as SMEs.

Home - Shared Value Africa Initiative

 14.00 - 15.00
CEST | 13 April 2021

The military aggression of Russia on Ukraine has rightly called for an international response with an unprecedented economic sanction to stop this war.

However, these sanctions will have a significant impact on European SMEs. So it is essential companies are aware of what they entail and where to find more information whenever necessary. It is also equally vital that there are measures in place to protect them from the brunt of the impact.

Join our webinar to find answers to key questions like what the sanctions entail and how to find out when they apply to specific cases. For example, let's say your product requires a component made in another EU country but which includes some parts coming from Russia. What happens then? Find out on April 7th at 14.00.

We will also present our requests to the Commission of what should be done to support SMEs under these unique circumstances to ensure they can keep thriving and producing wealth for Europe.

Our speakers include:

Ms Eva Revilla Peñaranda, Unit GROW D.2 Industrial Forum, Alliances and Clusters

Mr Thomas Mundry, Schneider Group

Mr Stefan Moritz, Managing Director of European Entrepreneurs will provide the opening.

Our Speakers

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of many economies in Africa and Europe, e.g. of the first two manufacturing nations in Europe, Germany and Italy. Entrepreneurship, professional training and investment are our focus, as keys for a strong African Mittelstand and a good basis for shared value business, which truly will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The conference aims to bring European and African entrepreneurs into play, encourage them to cooperate and co-invest, build alliances, joint ventures and partnerships through appropriate support and monitoring structures and mechanisms to verify the effectiveness and impact of their initiatives.

Launch of the Africa IP SME Helpdesk

Furthermore, at the event, EUIPO will launch the Africa IP SME Helpdesk, expected to be operational from October 2021. This is an EU-funded project set up to help SMEs from the EU in the process of creating, protecting, utilising, administering and enforcing intellectual property rights (IPR) across Africa.

Cooperation between the EU and African countries in the Africa IP SME Helpdesk project will provide a unique opportunity for European SMEs to invest in Africa and, in that process, enable African countries to access global business value chains while, at the same time, contributing to sustainable development and economic growth in Africa.
